Description:

Since 2002, The AjA Project has run Journey, an
after-school participatory photograph program in San Diego that

small and large-scale exhibits.
Projects May Include:

• Experience/ interest in sales
• Interest in international refugee issues
|
Description:
|
In addition to Journey, The AjA Project has a participatory
photography program initiative in Thailand. In 2000 AjA purchased
a weaving loom for the Karen people of Burma to promote fair trade
and self-sufficiency while keeping their unique weaving tradition
alive.
The AjA Project’s Thailand Vocational Weaving Program is implemented
in refugee camps along the Thailand/Burma border in collaboration
with the camps’ schools and has approximately 50 students
(ages 10-18) each semester. Students learn traditional Karen weaving
techniques and produce intricate bags and scarves that are sold
in the U.S. and in the camp to raise funds for the program. With
clothing provided by international aid organizations, there is no
need for woven clothing, and the tradition is beginning to disappear.
In order to keep alive the tradition among the Karen youth and provide
them with vocational skills, we have started this program in partnerships
with local middle and high schools. All profits will directly benefit
the Karen population.
Duties may include:
• Scouting out local shops and encouraging them to carry the
Karen bags and scarves
• Managing the inventory of in-coming and out-going weavings
• Organizing and selling weavings at AjA events and other
venues
• Accurately presenting The AjA Project’s mission, values
and programs to prospective establishments
•You will also have the option of attending class twice a
week as an assistant instructor.
