The purpose of
the Documentary Interchange program is to create a sense of community
and understanding amongst refugee youth in different parts of the world.
Students from The AjA Project's programs in Thailand, San Diego, and Colombia
letters and photographs, providing them the unique experience of communicating
with other young people who share with them the experience of displacement,
but who live in different cultures and under very different circumstances.
The AjA Project believes these young people will benefit from realizing
that they are not alone in their struggle to find a sense of identity
and belonging in a new home. The greater goal of the program is to increase
understanding across borders, and to encourage youth across the globe
to take the power of words and images into their own hands. Through the
experience of engaging young people from all over the world, we believe
that our students will be encouraged to see themselves not as victims
but as the protagonists of their own lives, with the power to effect change
both within their communities and in the world beyond.
