Working from a Social Ecology model that believes transformation can only be achieved when change is occurring simultaneously on the individual and social level, The AjA Project installs large-scale public exhibits, which intersect the student's creative expression with the larger community and create dialogue around issues related to identity. These large-scale exhibits broaden the reach of the visual narratives produced and serve as a bridge between differing sectors of our community -- providing a unique opportunity for these diverse communities to view one another, and themselves, from a new perspective. 

In addition, the confidence that the youth gain from sharing their photographs and stories also encourages them to value their heritage and cultures, and to embrace art as a powerful means of social dialogue and transformation. The AjA Project has reached nearly 1 million people through it’s large scale exhibits:

80+ photos in the business windows, 75ft banner on Price building, murals, 70+ street pole banners, 20+ fence banners all along the 1.5 mile stretch of University Avenue, San Diego

Re+COLLECT (2006)
24 7x8ft photos on banners in front of San Diego Museum of Art

iN+GraiN (2007)
Over 70 large-scale photos on banners at 5 sites throughout southeast San Diego

Barrio El Progreso (2008)
100+ banners hung on the walls throughtout the Barrio, Colombia

underSTAND (2009)
Large-scale photo installation at Naval Training Center promenade, San Diego
