LEAD PHOTOGRAPHY INSTRUCTOR – PAID

General Description:
The lead instructor will lead participatory photography based instruction at one site and work with the site’s assistant instructors. He or she will report directly to the Program Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend a mandatory orientation/training session before the semester
  • Coordinate weekly participatory photography workshops for displaced youth
  • Attend weekly instructor meetings with other lead instructors and the Program Director
  • Participate in curriculum development
  • Deliver AjA approved curriculum to displaced youth
  • Participate in planning and execution of end of the semester community exhibits; also attend event
  • Submit monthly reports to the Program Director detailing classroom activities
  • Administer program evaluation as outlined in AjA’s curriculum
  • Attend one all-staff organization meeting once per month, occurring the last Tuesday of each month
  • Facilitate brief meetings with assistant instructors before each class
  • Facilitate a training session with assistant instructors detailing the semester’s activities
  • Attend professional workshops as they become available

Requirements:

  • Culturally literate
  • Respectful of differing religious and political views      
  • Trained photographer plus experience in one or more of the following: ESL teaching, participatory photography methods, art therapy, child psychology, middle/high school counseling/education, social justice issues, or working with ethnically diverse communities
  • Strong communication skills -- ability to lead a team of 3-4 assistant instructors, and 20-25 middle or high school students
  • Interest in populations served and desire to help displaced youth share their stories
  • Experience facilitating large-group discussions and activities with middle or high school students
  • Time management skills and the ability to prioritize
  • Self-directed and initiative-taking
  • Existing social network of photographers, educators, and other professionals who can help bring new opportunities to the organization
